I’m Viola Minerva Virtamo and I’m a photographer, graphic designer and director. I started as a photographer when I was about 16 years old. My mom is a photographer, so I was lucky to have the access to both the equipment and the knowledge pretty early. I’ve learned mostly through working and I went to study photography for 2 years after I had already worked in the industry for a couple of years. I’ve always believed in learning through passion – when you want something enough, you will work for it and learn even though you wouldn’t study in a school. That’s how I’ve learned most of my photography, graphic design and filming skills.
Wie ben je en wanneer met je begonnen met fotograferen?
Ik ben Viola Minerva Virtamo en ik ben fotograaf, grafisch ontwerper en regisseur. Ik ben begonnen met fotografie toen ik ongeveer 16 jaar oud was. Mijn moeder is fotograaf, dus ik had het geluk dat ik al vrij vroeg de beschikking had over zowel de apparatuur als de kennis. Ik heb vooral geleerd door te doen en ik ben voor 2 jaar fotografie gaan studeren nadat ik al een paar jaar in de industrie had gewerkt. Ik heb altijd geloofd in leren vanuit je passie – als je iets graag genoeg wilt, zul je er voor moeten werken en ervan moeten leren, ondanks dat je er niet voor naar school gaat. Zo heb ik het grootste deel van mijn kennis over fotografie, – grafisch ontwerp en filmvaardigheden onder de knie gekregen.
Who are your clients?
I work for both magazines and publishing houses + lifestyle / design brands. I love big projects where I can create a whole visual world for my client through pictures, branding and brand films.
Wie zijn je opdrachtgevers?
Ik werk zowel voor bladen als voor uitgeverijen en lifestyle / design merken. Ik hou van grote projecten, waarin ik een hele visuele wereld voor mijn opdrachtgever mag creëren, door middel van film, branding en merk films.
How do you start with styling and what is your focus?
I think I always start with a story. I try to think what’s happening in the scene which I’m creating for my pictures and how to make the mood perfect and highlight the most important object in my picture. I always picture the final result in my mind, though I don’t want to be too strict when it comes to planning.
Usually the best ideas come while creating. My focus will always be creating a scene which tells a story. No matter if its a big dinner party in summer garden or a cozy winter breakfast, I want anyone looking at the picture to be able to feel the right mood! And of course to make the food or a product look good and tempting! I like both minimalistic and rustic style.
Hoe begin je met styling en waar leg je de focus?
Ik denk dat ik altijd begin met het verhaal. Ik probeer me in te denken wat er gebeurd in de scene die ik voor ogen heb voor mijn foto’s en hoe ik de sfeer hiervoor kan perfectioneren en het meest belangrijke onderwerp in de foto kan uitlichten. Meestal komen de beste ideeën terwijl ik bezig ben met het creëren van het beeld.
Mijn focus ligt dat ook altijd op het creëren van het verhaal in de foto. Het maakt niet uit of het een groot diner is in de zomer buiten in de tuin of een knus winters ontbijt, ik wil dat iedereen die naar de foto kijkt in staat is de juiste sfeer te voelen. En natuurlijk probeer ik het eten of het product er zo mooi en aantrekkelijk mogelijk er uit te laten zien. Ik hou van zowel een minimalistische en landelijke stijl.
What backdrops and props are you often using?
Mostly I use for backdrops old wood planks, marble and linen. Also I’ve bought and painted some other backdrops. My prop selection is quite big because I love pretty vintage porcelain and rustic ceramics. I love old looking tableware and most of my props I’ve bought from 2nd hand stores and flea markets. I use a lot of fabrics and nature elements like flowers and green branches. It’s also nice to bring into a picture something special which isn’t so obviously related to food, which helps to create the story around the shot!
Welke backdrops en props gebruik je vaak?
Als backdrop gebruik ik meestal houten planken, marmer en linnen. Ik heb ook een aantal backdrops zelf geschilderd of gekocht. Mijn prop collectie is vrij groot, want ik hou van mooi oud porselein en keramiek met een landelijke uitstraling. Ik hou van oud uitziend serviesgoed en het meeste van mijn props heb ik gekocht bij de kringloop en op vlooienmarkten. Ik gebruik veel stoffen en natuurlijke elementen zoals bloemen en takken groen. Het is ok altijd goed om iets speciaals in de foto weer te geven wat niet food gerelateerd is, maar wel helpt het verhaal in de foto compleet te maken.
Which light do you work with (daylight/artificial)? And if you work with artificial light, do you use speedlite or a daylightlamp?
Almost always daylight. For clients I might do more artificial light if it fits the style we’re looking for. But 99,9% of my pictures in instagram are taken in daylight. But if I work with artificial light, it’s almost always a flash. I use it more for product photography than food.
Met welke licht werk je het liefste ( daglicht of kunstlicht)? Wanneer je met kunstlicht werkt, gebruik je dan daglichtlamp of een flitser?
Bijna altijd daglicht. Voor klanten gebruik ik misschien meer kunstlicht als het past bij de stijl die we zoeken. Maar 99,9% van mijn foto’s op instagram zijn gemaakt met daglicht. Maar als ik met kunstlicht werk, is het bijna altijd een flitser. Ik gebruik het meer voor productfotografie dan voor food fotografie.
How do you do action shots and what are you’re settings?
It depends a lot on what I’m doing and what kind of result I want. But in action shot planning is even more important than usually. You have to think how you’ll create the movement and how to achieve the result you want. Usually I want to catch and stop the movement, so I need to have very high shutter speed like 1/500s or even faster + use manual focus. Also a tripod helps a lot if you’re working alone!
Hoe maakt je actie foto’s en welke instellingen gebruik je?
Het hangt af van wat ik doe en wat voor resultaat ik wil. Maar bij actie foto’s is de planning nog belangrijker dan normaal. Je moet nadenken over hoe je de beweging gaat creëren en hoe je het gewenste resultaat kunt bereiken. Meestal wil ik de beweging vangen en stilzetten in het beeld, dus moet ik een zeer hoge sluitertijd hebben zoals 1/500s of zelfs sneller + gebruik maken van handmatige scherpstelling. Ook een statief helpt veel als je alleen werkt!
What camera and lenses do you use and/or tripod?
My camera is Nikon D810 and my most used lens is 50mm f/1.4. Sometimes I also use 24-70mm lens for wide shots. I also own 2 other lenses I use for other kind of work projects. I have two tripods, a very basic Slik tripod and a big Manfrotto C-Stand (I love it! It’s perfect for big flatlays!).
Welke camera, lenzen en/ of een statief gebruik je?
Mijn camera is een Nikon D810 en mijn meest gebruikte lens een 50mm f/1.4. Soms gebruik ik een 24-70mm lens voor wijdere shots. Ik heb nog twee andere lenzen welke ik voor andere werk of projecten gebruik. Ik heb twee statieven, een basis Slik statief en een grote Manfrotto C-stand (Ik hou van deze, hij perfect voor grote flatlays!)
Which program do you uses to edit your photos?
Lightroom and Photoshop. Mostly Lightroom, but then for little detail fixing, combining several pictures or creating a cinemagraph I use Photoshop.
Welk programma gebruik je om je foto’s te bewerken?
Lightroom en Photoshop. Meestal Lightroom, maar voor het bewerken van klein details, het combineren van meerdere foto’s of een bewegend beeld gebruik ik Photoshop.
Tips and tricks?
To every creative, experimenting is the key to learning! Try different things to find your style and don’t be disappointed when something doesn’t work immediately. And I know it’s hard, but try not to compare yourself to people who have been working in the business for years. We all have started from the scratch! Watch tutorials, find inspiration pictures and ask tips from people who inspire you!
Tips en tricks?
Voor elke creatieveling is experimenteren de sleutel tot leren! Probeer verschillende dingen om je stijl te vinden en wees niet teleurgesteld als iets niet direct werkt. Ik weet dat het moeilijk is, maar probeer jezelf niet te vergelijken met mensen die al jaren in het vak werken. We zijn allemaal vanaf het begin begonnen!
